Coffee Grounds & Pineapple , Kahvinporot & ananas

coffee grounds helping pineapple leaves
May 14 & June 2020 - Toukokuun 14. & kesäkuun 18.

Here's closer look at how used coffee grounds helped my pineapple to get back closer to its earlier color. Was it lack of nitrogen, phosphorus, or both? I don't know the answer, but I believe this is thanks to coffee grounds. Although I write this only now, I noticed the difference at least a week ago.

Reilu viikko sitten ainakin näytti jo paljon paremmalta.

Recipe: Pineapple pie, ananaspiirakka

slice of pineapple pie

The following recipe is basically a pineapple version of super popular apple pie recipe that can be found on Finnish site Kotikokki. Be sure to try the original apple pie recipe published by user pohjanka, you'll love it.

Ingredients

  • 200 g liquid margarine
  • 120 g sugar
  • 200 g flour
  • 1 egg
  • 0,75 dl / 0,26 cup [UK] / 0,31 cup [US] fat-free milk
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp vanilla sugar
  • 2 small cans of pineapple chunks (~280 g)

Instructions

Start by mixing margarine and sugar in a bowl. Personally I use Finnish product "Valio Oivariini liquid", a mixture of butter and turnip rape oil. Healthier option and great for cooking.

Slowly add flour while mixing. After adding flour to the mixture, take some of it (around a cup) and put it aside for later use.

Now it's time to add an egg, milk, baking powder and vanilla sugar. Mix it strongly until it's smooth.

Pour the pastry into a greased pie dish.

Next we have the pineapple part of the recipe. Place them as you like. For the pie two little cans are enough. In the photo below, the pie doesn't have two full cans (since I had to eat a few chunks, could not resist) but almost.

Sprinkle the remaining pastry on the top of pineapple chunks. You can add a bit of sugar too if you like. Despite having very sweet pineapple on these, a little amount of sugar on the top of it was alright.

Bake at 200 ℃ (400 ℉) for around 30 minutes.

Growing pineapple at home , Ananaksen kasvatus kotona

Something I've wanted to do is grow my own pineapples, and now it was finally time to start this new fun project. I've read a bit about growing pineapples, and I came to the conclusion that I will try some different methods of growing and different sorts of pineapples too. I'm living in Finland, in northern Europe, so it will make this project longer for sure since our summers are so short.

These organic pineapples I bought, come from Ivory Coast, from a small town called Bonoua. It's the best bet to buy pineapples with green healthy leaves with no signs of insects. Personally I didn't have much options when I finally found a store that had some for sale, so for now I just tried to choose the best two available. Later on I will start growing third one, or more, while these two are still growing. Right now I'm not too confident about these two, but we will see whether they stay alive or not.

Kasvatusta ajatellen on suositeltavaa ostaa ananas missä on terveet vihreät lehdet.

Now that I finally got my pineapples, it was time to remove the crown from the fruit. Sadly I totally forgot to take photos of that operation. Anyway, it's very simple. To remove the crown just take a firm grip on the grown and twist. After removing it, I put the fruit part aside for later use and removed all the fruit flesh from the stalk. Fruit flesh on stalk would otherwise probably rot the whole thing. Then I started to cut thin slices from the stalk until I saw these brown little dots shown in the photos below. The roots should start growing from these.

Seuraavaksi leikkasin hyvin ohuita siivuja varresta kunnes sain esille ruskeahkoja täpliä, kuten alla olevissa kuvissa. Näistä olisi tarkoitus alkaa kasvaa juuria.

Then I removed some of the lower leaves from the stalks.

Having stalks ready, I let them dry for a few days. I've done these steps 3rd of July, so at the time of writing this blog post, the stalks have already dried for almost a week. To clarify, the photo below is from the same day as the previous photos. My next post will have dried stalks.
