Half of a lamp , Lampun puolikas

Before getting into the main topic of this post, it's time to take a look at the plants. Let's start with the potted one (upper plant photo). New leaves have grown a little bit, but the outer new leaves at the bottom have turned a bit brownish and look not so healthy. I wonder if this is too bad.  About the roots, I think they have taken some hold of the soil. At least a bit.

With the plant in the second photo there haven't been any growth that I could actually notice. On one leaf, the tip of it has turned a little bit brown. Sometimes I think whether it's too late for this to succeed or not, considering there's still no new roots after all these months. But since the new leaves are mostly healthy looking, I guess hope is not lost just yet?

In Finnish: Ennen kuin mennään itse aiheeseen, katsotaan mitä kuuluu ananaksille. Aloitetaan ruukutetulla. Uudet lehdet ovat kasvaneet hieman tammikuun aikana,, mutta uusien lehtien uloimmat lehdet aivan alhaalla ovat muuttaneet väriään huonoon suuntaan. Mitä juuriin tulee, luulen että ne ovat saaneet vähän otetta mullasta.

Alkuperäisen, yhä vedessä olevan ananaksen kohdalla ei ole paljoa tapahtunut. Yhden lehden kärki on hieman muuttunut rusehtavammaksi ja pehmeämmäksi. Joskus mietin että tuleekohan tuosta enää mitään, kun on niin monta kuukautta ollut vedessä ja juuria ei näy. Kuitenkin niin kauan kuin lehdet näyttää suurimmaksi osaksi terveiltä, jaksan uskoa että toivoa vielä on.

And finally about the lamp

As mentioned in the last post of 2018, I ordered my very first grow lamp. Knowing nothing about these, I looked around for cheap but decent options to finally try how it goes. After taking a quick look at several Finnish online stores, I found one with pretty good selection of lamps. 14W LED lamp caught my attention thanks to its price of around 30€ and fairly good reviews. This lamp has 165 red and 60 blue LED lights.

On the page, I read through all of the feedback to learn more. As I guessed, nobody mentioned pineapple. Growing chili was clearly the number one. Some flaws were mentioned, such as fragile structure, short cable and lack of accessories for hanging it. Considering the low price these were totally justified. Since there wasn't any of these lamps left in their storage in Finland, I had to wait for new one which was sent from China. It took around two weeks.

Let's start with the lack of accessories. My lamp came with strings which surely was positive little surprise. All I really needed now as some hook that I would put up into the ceiling, and luckily I had one here at home. The cable indeed was quite short, but it wasn't any problem. The lamp being fragile however, was the reason it didn't really arrive in one piece. Should had guessed! The product was well packaged in my opinion so I won't blame that store for this. 

Probably thanks to the broken section of this product, just around half of the bulbs did not work. I didn't mind the crack in one of the corners, but having just half of the light made me ask for a new lamp. After a few emails to the customer support and promise of new lamp it was many days later informed that there wasn't any of these lamps left. This followed a few emails and as a result I'm getting my money back... at some point.

Now after keeping the lamp in its original box for almost whole past month, I have put it in use to make sure this all wasn't in vain. Time to see if it's enough to help these pineapple plants grow.

In Finnish: Kuten 2018 lopulla mainitsin, laitoin vihdoin ja viimein tilaukseen kasvilampun. Tietämättä juuri mitään niistä, ajattelin että paras aloittaa kokeilut jollain sopivan halvalla. Katselin nettikauppoja läpi kunnes törmäsin yhteen, missä oli mukava valikoima lamppuja. Tutkiskelin tarkemmin lamppua mistä löytyisi tehoa 14W ja hintaa ~30€. Tuotesivulla oli runsas määrä tuotearvosteluja, pääosin positiivisia kokemuksia.

Luin arvostelut läpi. Kuten vähän arvelinkin, ei mainintoja ananaksesta. Joitain mainintoja erilaisista hedelmistä taisi olla, mutta se ykkösjuttu oli chilin kasvatus - missä lamppu näytti toimivan ihan hyvin. Huonoiksi puoliksi oltiin mainittu mm. hauras rakenne, lyhyt johto ja kiinnitysvälineiden puute. Hinta oli kuitenkin houkutteleva joten mitäpä noilla väliä. Lamppuja ei ollut Suomen varastossa joten tilaamani lamppu lähti matkaan Kiinasta, mistä ne muutenkin alunperin siis tuli. Tuossa kesti noin pari viikkoa.

Pieneksi yllätykseksi saamassani lampussa oli  kulmissa langat millä sen sai helposti roikkumaan katosta. Johto oli tosiaan aika lyhyt, mutta minulle se ei tuottanut ongelmia. Heikko rakenne sen sijaan sitten lopulta haittasi, kun levyn kulmasta oli palanen halki. Mitä luultavammin juuri tuon halkeaman takia noin puolet lampuista eivät palaneet. Otin yhteyttä asiakaspalveluun, ja minulle luvattiin lopulta tilalle uusi. Odottelin joitain päiviä kunnes tuli viesti että tuo olikin sitten viimeinen. Lisää viestejä ja lopputuloksena odotan nyt rahoja takaisin.

Jottei kaikki tämä odottelu menisi aivan hukkaan, otin (aiemmin vielä mahdollista) palautusta varten pakatun tuotteen käyttöön vaikka nyt sitten puolitehoilla. Saapahan nähdä tuottaako lamppu tulosta.

Just a little update about the potted plant and at the same time, most likely the last post of 2018. Around 20 days after the last photo, some changes can be seen on the new leaves. Anyway, now I'm  waiting for the plant lamp I ordered before Christmas. About it I'll post as soon as I get it, can't wait to see how well it works. Happy New Year to everyone!

Vuoden erittäin todennäköisesti viimeisenä postauksena laitetaan pieni päivitys ruukutetusta ananaksesta. Viime kuvasta on kulunut suunnilleen 20 päivää, ja tuossa ajassa selviä muutoksia on nähtävissä. Ennen joulua tilasin kasvilampun, siitä lisää heti kun paketti on saapunut. Hyvää uutta vuotta kaikille!

Quick winter update , Talven tilannekatsaus

Time for a small update. I have now finally planted my pineapple crown that has roots. While it was still in water, it very slowly started growing some leaves that can be seen in the first photo. For now I'm trying my best at keeping the soil moisturized. The second photo has my older crown that has no roots. I think it has grown just a little bit, after all the sunlight is almost non-existent right now in winter.

Also I've been looking at some plant lights, I'm going to buy one soon.

Pitkästä aikaa pientä päivitystä. Isompi ruusuke (ylempi kuva) on nyt pienessä kukkaruukussa kaktusmullassa. Vielä sen ollessa vedessä se ehti luoda pienen alun lehdille. Yritän pitää mullan hieman kosteana, ja saa taas nähdä miten käy. Alemmassa kuvassa on vanhempi hattu, mikä ei ole vieläkään saanut juuria aikaseksi. Näyttää siltä että hyvin pientä kasvua lehdissä on tapahtunut näin talvellakin.

Viime aikoina olen tutkiskellut nettikauppojen tarjontaa kasvatusvaloista, ja tarkoituksena olisi tilata sellainen pian.

New pineapple and its roots , Uusi ananas ja sen juuret

It's been a bit over two months since my last post. After that post, the leaves grew pretty fast while it still was warm and sunny. Now it's autumn and I haven't really seen any growth in leaves for a while. Old leaves died pretty quickly when new leaves were growing fast. Roots I still haven't seen, sadly. When weather got colder, I started to water it less. Partly because I thought it wasn't as needed at that point and because I've had busier times, away from home. Also didn't change the water as often. Thinking about buying some sort of lamp to help it grow during colder seasons, but that's something I need to read about more. I would be looking for something not so expensive.

FINNISH: Viime blogipostauksesta on jo vähän yli kaksi kuukautta. Vielä viime postauksen jälkeen uusien lehtien alut kasvoivat hyvää vauhtia sään ollessa suotuisa. Uusien lehtien kasvaessa vanhat kuolivat. Juurista ei kuitenkaan ole havaintoa vieläkään. Nyt syksyn puolella ei ole lehdissä kasvua näkynyt, kuten vähän arvelinkin. Vähensin lehtien kastelua heti sään kylmetessä, myös lasipurkin vesiä vaihdoin harvemmin. Tämä osittain mutu-tuntuman tulosta, osittain kiireiden syytä. Koska kovasti haluaisin nähdä kasvua talvellakin, olen miettinyt jonkin sortin kasvatuslampun hankkimista. Aiheesta pitänee kuitenkin lukea vielä jostain, kun en niistä mitään tiedä. Hinnan tulisi olla myös kohtuullinen.

Before my last post I actually started growing new pineapple plant, but I never told about it until now. So yeah, late July I bought bigger pineapple for some cooking. Since by then one of my two original pineapple hats had completely died, I had good spot for another attempt at growing pineapple. Nothing to lose so why not give it a try. This new one wasn't organic like the first two, but some of the more common species I see in bigger grocery stores. This one was much bigger also. I was pretty sure nothing will come out of this pineapple, but I was wrong. At least for now.

With this one I decided to use same sort of rooting plan as I have with my another remaining pineapple crown, so I put it into water. For this one I didn't change the water as often, usually every three days and later once in  a week. At the beginning I watered the leaves daily, but started to do it less when the weather got colder. Just after a bit over five weeks of waiting, I noticed some roots growing. For some reason I was a bit surprised. Soon after that more roots started to appear and grow. Those have been still growing until this day, the longest root being around 10 centimeters (3.9 inches). Guess I should put it in soil soon and see how it goes.

IN FINNISH: Ennen viimeisintä postausta olin laittanut uuden ananaksen aluille, mutta jostain syystä en ikinä raaskinut siitä kertoa. En odottanut että tästä heinäkuun lopulla ostetusta ananaksesta tulisi mitään, mutta päätin huvin vuoksi kokeilla, sillä olihan minulla hyvä paikka ikkunan äärellä toisen alkuperäisen ananaksen kuoltua. Eihän tässä mitään menetettävääkään ollut. Uusi ananas ei ollut luomu kuten kaksi aikaisempaa. Kokoa tuolta löytyi enemmän.

Päätin käyttää juurruttamiseen samaa konstia kuin toisen elossa olevan ruusukkeen kanssa, eli vedessä juurruttamista. Vaihdoin veden alkuun noin kolmen päivän välein, ja myöhemmin vielä harvemmin. Alkuun kastelin lehtiä suihkepullolla kerran päivässä, mutta vähensin tätä syksyn saapuessa. Meni noin viitisen viikkoa kunnes huomasin ensimmäiset juuret. Täytyy myöntää että yllätyin hieman. Juuria alkoi pian kasvaa lisää ja niille tuli myös pituutta aina tähänkin päivään asti. Pisin on noin 10 senttiä. Pitäisi varmaan jo tyrkätä multaan ja katsoa miten tässä käy.

New pineapple leaves , Ananaksen uudet lehdet

It's been a month now since I put my pineapple crowns to root. The smaller one I put in the soil sadly died off pretty quickly. I guess it's simply because of too little watering, I didn't keep it that moisturized at all and it was standing on south facing window along with the other one while we have had these heat inferno summer weeks. 

However, the one in the water is alive and it has even started to grow some new leaves. I still have to wait for the roots to appear though. The old leaf tips turned brown pretty quickly as I started rooting in July. That shouldn't matter. I changed the water almost every day of the month, which might be a bit more than needed. I watered the crown with a spray bottle at least once in a day, but during the sunniest days I felt it was good to lightly water it a couple of times. The photos are taken outside as you can see, but I've had them indoors whole last month.

IN FINNISH: Kuukausi on kulunut siitä kun asetin ananasten ruusukkeet juurtumaan. Valitettavasti pienempi näistä, multaan tyrkätty, kuivui kokonaan lyhyessä ajassa. Liian vähäinen kastelu oli varmasti syy tähän, myös erittäin helteiset päivät talon eteläisellä ikkunalla varmasti edesauttoi totaalista kuivumista. 

Vedessä, vanhassa oliivipurkissa oleva isompi hattu sen sijaan elää (ja ainakin toivon että) voi hyvin. Juuria joutunee vielä odotella, mutta muutoksia on tapahtunut, nimittäin uutta lehteä kasvaa vanhojen seasta. Vanhojen lehtien kärjet kuivuivat nopeasti, mutta sillä ei tietääkseni ole väliä. Vaihdoin lasipurkin veden lähes joka päivä. Kastelin lehtiä suihkepullolla vähintään kerran päivässä, aurinkoisimpina päivinä koin tarpeelliseksi kastella muutaman kerran. Vaikka alla olevat kuvat onkin otettu saunan terassilla, pidin kuvan ruusukkeen ja kuivuneen ruusukkeen sisätiloissa koko menneen kuukauden.

Recipe: Pineapple pie, ananaspiirakka

The following recipe is basically a pineapple version of super popular apple pie recipe that can be found on Finnish site Kotikokki. Be sure to try the original apple pie recipe published by user pohjanka, you'll love it.

Ingredients

• 200 g liquid margarine
• 120 g sugar
• 200 g flour
• 1 egg
• 0,75 dl / 0,26 cup [UK] / 0,31 cup [US] fat-free milk
• 1 tsp baking powder
• 1 tsp vanilla sugar
• 2 small cans of pineapple chunks (~280 g)

Instructions

Start by mixing margarine and sugar in a bowl. Personally I use Finnish product "Valio Oivariini liquid", a mixture of butter and turnip rape oil. Healthier option and great for cooking.

Slowly add flour while mixing. After adding flour to the mixture, take some of it (around a cup) and put it aside for later use.

Now it's time to add an egg, milk, baking powder and vanilla sugar. Mix it strongly until it's smooth.

Pour the pastry into a greased pie dish.

Next we have the pineapple part of the recipe. Place them as you like. For the pie two little cans are enough. In the photo below, the pie doesn't have two full cans (since I had to eat a few chunks, could not resist) but almost. 

Sprinkle the remaining pastry on the top of pineapple chunks. You can add a bit of sugar too if you like. Despite having very sweet pineapple on these, a little amount of sugar on the top of it was alright.

Bake at 200 ℃ (400 ℉) for around 30 minutes.

Dried leaves , Kuivuneet lehdet

The leaves have dried for almost a week now and I have to say they don't look so good in my eyes. They never did, so it was expected of course, because of how they looked in the shop already. But I'm not a farmer, I only ever planted small amount of potatoes before this. I put the first one in water and second one straight into the cactus soil. I'm guessing I have better changes to get roots with the one in water, but this is just a guess and not based in any sort of knowledge. I have them both at my sunniest window now and I have moistened them.


Lehdet ovat kuivuneet melkein viikon, ja on pakko myöntää että ei näytä hyvältä omasta mielestä. Tämä oli kuitenkin odotettavissa kun ottaa huomioon lähtökohdat aina kauppareissusta alkaen. Näitä ennen olen yrittänyt kasvattaa vain perunoita, muistaakseni, joten kokemusta ei juurikaan löydy. Laitoin ensimmäisen varren veteen juurtumaan, toisen suoraan kaktusmultaan. Luulen että mahdollisuudet ovat paremmat näiden kahden osalta veteen laitetulla. Tämä kuitenkin vain veikkaus., joten nähtäväksi jää. Siirsin molemmat varret aurinkoisimmalle ikkunalle mitä kotoa löytyy ja kostutin ne.
