October Update , Lokakuun päivitys

In bit over a month my more recent pineapples have grown a lot. Especially the first one I'll be showing. It has surpassed all pineapples I've had so far. I start to believe that my current lamp is pretty good for this project. The second photo shows the same plant, just after cutting some old leaves.

The third photo is from another one. Looks like it's been growing a bit slower, but I like how the leaves look.

Finnish: Kuukauden aikana tuoreemmat lisäykset ovat kasvaneet hienosti, varsinkin ensimmäisenä näytetty (kaksi ensimmäistä kuvaa - toinen kuva samasta, leikkasin vain vähän vanhoja lehtiä). Näyttäisi siltä, että lamppu pelittää hyvin, mitä siis ainakin lehtien kasvun vauhdista voi päätellä.

Kolmas kuva on toisesta.

Old two baby pineapples had been dead for a while, and now it was time to replace them. The old ones never managed to grow roots while they were on plant pots. For a first time I plant baby pineapple stalks that already have roots, thanks to rooting in water. (photo below).

The roots ended up growing quite a lot since I suddenly became very busy and had no time to plant them when I was supposed to. Another thing worth noting is that these seem to have much less roots than those bigger pineapples.

Lamp Upgrade , Uutta lamppua

Upgraded my indoor pineapple corner with "Lumeri LQ300" LED grow light. 30W lamp was now (again) replaced with 300W. I had this earlier, a few weeks ago. However it was broken and made some noise it wasn't supposed to. LUMERI kindly fixed it or replaced it with new one, I'm not even sure if this is the same lamp. But all good now! I hope this super bright lamp will help my pineapples grow through the winter.

Finally Something Happens , Vihdoinkin jotain eloa

I'm happy to see something is actually growing. While my now over year old pineapple has stopped growing a while ago (after "waking up from dead", at least once), the ones I started rooting in late July have started to grow leaves from the very middle. And that is totally new for me, not as an information, but as experience.

After so many pineapples, these two are the first ones to grow leaves from the middle - previously it happened from the sides. Maybe the chances are better now? Worth noting that most, if not all of the growth happened under my current lamp (that will soon be replaced with better one). Photos below, sorry about the quality of them. The earliest and the latest photos I took, after noticing something actually is happening.

Finnish: Vihdoinkin olen saanut seurata lehtien kasvua.

Trying to Root Mini Pineapples , Testissä miniananasten juurruttaminen

Baby pineapples
4th August / Elokuun 4.

In early August I bought two baby pineapples when I happened to spot some that in my eyes had good condition. These are the same Queen Victoria pineapples I've previously had. Easily available from my local hypermarket.

I think that only once I tried to root one in water, and I had no luck. Before placing them into water, I let them dry for only a day. At least with some previous one I waited whole week. This time after 2-3 weeks in water I noticed small roots on both of these new ones. Next, I moved them closer to my lamp but not directly below it. I still need to wait for them to grow more and hope that the stalk won't rot.

In other news; I'm updating my "pineapple farm". I already have bigger table. I'm replacing my 30W LED grow light with 300W. I already had the lamp, but sadly it was making suspicious noise. I was told to send it back so it can be fixed or replaced with new one.

Finnish: Elokuun alussa tuli Prismasta ostettua kaksi hyväkuntoiselta vaikuttanutta miniananasta.

Recipe: Cucumber Pineapple Salad , Kurkku-ananassalaatti

cucumber pineapple salad

Wanted to prepare some salad that has great amount of pineapple. I've often had pineapple with cucumber. This time inspired by recipes seen in the past, I added a few extra things, including simple two-ingredient dressing. I had bought an organic pineapple, but it appeared to be overripe when I finally had time for this. As a plan B, I took two small cans of Dole's pineapple chunks and one Queen Victoria mini pineapple.

Ingredients

  • medium-size pineapple (or 3-4 small cans of pineapple chunks)
  • 2 cucumbers (300-400 g each)
  • medium-size red onion
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 1/4 cup lime juice (juice from two limes)
  • (fresh mint leaves)

Instructions

  1. Peel, core and cut pineapple into pieces if using fresh one(s). Cut red onion into slices. Cut cucumber into small pieces or round slices. Mix pineapple chunks, thin onion slices and cucumber pieces in a bowl.
  2. Combine honey with lime juice. Pour over salad.
  3. Add fresh mint leaves if you like.
  4. Serve immediately or refrigerate until ready to serve.

Tips: Red bell pepper goes well with cucumber and everything goes well with pineapple. Try it. Instead of garnishing the salad with mint leaves, you can chop them and use as part of the dressing.

kurkku-ananassalaatti

Ainekset

  • keskikokoinen ananas (tai kolme-neljä pientä purkkia paloja)
  • 2 keskikokoista kurkkua (300-400 g painoisia)
  • keskikokoinen punasipuli
  • 2 ruokalusikkaa hunajaa
  • 1/2 dl limen mehua (kahden limen mehut)
  • (tuoreita mintun lehtiä)

Ohjeet

Quite a while since my last post, especially since my last update on growing pineapples. Not that much has happened with my pineapples, but nevertheless it's time to write again. Bunch of photos were unfortunately lost since one of my phones (which was still very new, and which I used for more recent photos) lies in the bottom of a lake. Great Midsummer!  Anyways let's take a look at what is new.

First thing that applies to all my "old" pineapples: They've been on the window (instead of my old spot under the lamp) for some weeks now, basically because every now and then I've been away from home for days, due to work and holiday trips.

Ihan alkuun yksi huomio mikä koskettaa kaikkia ananaksia ruukuissa: En ole pitänyt niitä viimeisiin muutamiin viikkoihin lampun alla, vaan ikkunan luona.

Pineapples
Ananakset

Below is the only one I have, that has new leaves growing (another one died). It's like it hasn't grown at all during summer, but when I compare new photos to those from my last update (May 15th), I can clearly see some of the leaves are indeed bigger. Since I lost quite a few photos from summer, sadly I have no clue now when the growth has been faster and so. It did slow down soon after potting it again.

Unfortunate change is that many leaf tips got brown, and this is very recent change. Only one tip was brown while I still had this under the lamp. Some older parts near the tips have also "curled". I think it's because of sometimes low humidity levels (at the window it naturally varies more), but there might something wrong with watering or so too.

The side of the pot with new leaves (the part of the soil that can be seen on the photo) dries faster than the other side. I think the roots have taken some hold of the soil too.

Here we have the pineapple I planted in May 15th. Haven't seen any new leaves yet, but I believe (and hope...) roots are fine. I think the roots of this one have taken a bit of hold of the soil too.

These mini pineapples I planted in May 1st. The ones I bought before these (there was four of them) died pretty fast. The main difference I believe was that these two had quite golden shell, while those older ones were all green. These have some dried lower leaves, but the middle-ones are still green. However there's no growth in roots, I noticed this when I re-potted them earlier this week. Also no new leaves.

Vaihdoin mullat aiemmin viikolla.

It's been difficult to find pineapples I would consider planting, and I've been to different grocery stores a lot during summer, every time checking what the shop has to offer. When it comes to the usual pineapples we have in stores, I've had most "luck" in rooting with those pineapples that have pretty big and green crown. Sadly, recently I've had terrible luck finding good, healthy organic pineapples.

Below is one of the common (not organic) pineapples. Rooting this in water didn't take long at all. Also worth noting that this time I only allowed the stalk to dry just less than 24 hours.

Alla on yksi näitä yleisimpiä kaupan ananaksia. Juuret kasvoivat hyvin nopeasti vesilasissa.

Pineapple roots

Other Stuff
Muuta pientä

Something that I should have done long time ago was to figure out how humid it actually is here. I remember reading that good humidity level for pineapples is around 50%. Well, actions were indeed needed and for some time I've now had some plates and cups with water near my pineapples. Now it's probably the least dry season of the year, I guess winter will be challenge. I've used this meter I ordered through Ebay for almost two months now.

Finnish: Eräs asia mikä olisi jo aikapäiviä sitten pitänyt hankkia on mittari millä tarkistaa ilman kosteus. Hankin mittarin Ebayn kautta.

Humidity and indoor temperature meter

Another thing I've had only since this summer is a soil moisture meter. I actually bought two of these, one from Ebay seller (the green one) and one from Finnish shop. Actions were needed again, I started to water the soil with more water. Now I'm basically trying to figure out what is the right amount, how often I should actually water and how moist the soil should be. For now I've tried to keep it moist (the middle part) and avoid turning it wet.

At one point earlier in summer, when we had warm temperatures of 30℃, the top of the soil on some of the plant pots got white mold (lost photos of it). I had my pineapples under the  lamp, in one corner of this room. And yeah, it was that  30℃ in this room as well. At the time I kept the top part of the soil moist, and together with those temperatures it created the mold. I don't know if it was harmful or anything, I just scooped it off and changed my watering habits and it stopped appearing.

Soil moisture meters

Netin puolelta kuitenkin löytyi, tilasin kuvan mustan mittarin K-Raudan nettikaupasta. Vihreä on Ebay-ostos.

I have just found my new favorite way to enjoy ice cream, and it's having it on top of Colombian fruit cocktail Salpicón de Frutas. First time I heard about this from a book called Latin Flavours (by Michel Garzón & Kira Weckman). Basically this cocktail has pieces of different fruits in soda or juice. In Colombia, traditional soda Colombiana is often used. I don't have it very easily available (I think), so I used watermelon and lemon flavoured soft drink from Kane's Soda Pop, The Wedge

When it comes to fruits too, salpicón is very customizable. Finding different tropical fruits from grocery stores is surprisingly easy here in Finland, so I could have easily had something more rare too. Other than pineapple, main thing I wanted to have on my salpicón was Finnish strawberries. I have my own strawberry patch in the backyard, but those strawberries are not ready for picking just yet. So I went to buy some from the local strawberry farm. Sometime I would like to try strawberry juice version of this cocktail.

Salpicón de Frutas

Note: The amounts of fruits and soda below give three glasses of cocktail (with enough room for ice cream, for all three), like seen in the photo above. Glasses I have are 12.5 oz (US) 13 oz (UK). The recipe is mostly for inspiration, as this cocktail is super customizable.

Ingredients I used

  • 1 cup of pineapple chunks (one small can)
  • 1 cup of watermelon pieces
  • 1/2 cup of seedless black grapes, cut in half
  • 1/2 cup of strawberry pieces
  • 1/2 cup of papaya
  • 11.2 oz / 11.6 oz soda
  • vanilla ice cream

Instructions
  1. Mix the cut fruit in a bowl (unless you want to put them in layers)
  2. Fill the glasses with fruit pieces halfway
  3. Pour ice cold soda into the glasses
  4. Top with ice cream and decorate, if you wish

  • 2,5 dl ananaspaloja (yksi pieni purkki)
  • 2,5 dl vesimelonia paloina
  • 1,2 dl tummia siemenettömiä viinirypäleitä puolitettuna
  • 1,2 dl mansikoita (paloittele jos isoja)
  • 1,2 dl papaijaa paloina
  • pullo (33 cl) virvoitusjuomaa
  • vaniljajäätelöä

Ohjeet
  1. Sekoita hedelmäpalat kulhossa
  2. Täytä lasit hedelmillä noin puolilleen
  3. Kaada juoma laseihin hedelmien joukkoon
  4. Halutessasi aseta päälle vaniljajäätelöä / koristele hedelmillä

Huom.
